Mokau Beach Fishing With Kites Part 1
By
Kite fishing from the beach at Mokau in New Zealand. These surf fishing fanatics are casting fishing lines with up to 25 baited fish hooks one mile or more offshore. This has to be one of the most efficient fishing techniques around for catching fish for the table. The surf casting catch includes snapper, red cod, kahawai, gurnard and sharks.

Question by Irish Eyes: Does anyone have any tips for fishing Lake Mead?
I’ll be there for 1 day: Monday 3/19/07 from 8AM – 12PM.
I’ll be renting a 17′ boat with a 40hp 2-stroke outboard. The boat will be rented from Lake Mead Marina.
I would like to fish for stripers and/or largemouth bass. I would like information on the spots that I can easily get to from Lake Mead Marina and how to fish them for stripers and largemouths. Thanks for your input.

If you’re lucky, you’ll pull up a B-29.

I can understand why Jeff is the best kite fisherman in the world……because he’s the ONLY kite fisherman in the world!

@paulauckland
i couldnt see how you hooked the baitted line to the kite, also i didnt see how you mounted the hooks {close up} to the tail line that goes inside the water, if u can show how, this type of fishing needs the wind direction inside the ocean not the oposite?

I fish to catch fish to eat. These fish are up to a mile offshore and I am landbased. If you can suggest another way of getting baited hooks that far out I would be keen to hear it.
Bait presentation with this style of fishing is crucial. You don’t get a chance to pull on the line and set the hook and fish can take as much time as they want in stealing poorly presented baits. You have to know a raft of other little nothings to be successful with this kind of fishing.

While I like the idea of this, there is very little finesse / skill involved in the actual catching is there. It does not rely on instinct, playing a fish, bait presentation, knowing when to set the hook, etc…. . The technique is all in the set up and launching of the kite, but not necessarily in the art of fishing itself.

thumbs up to you guys doing this but seeing that birds nest in the line and with what all you gotta do to fish this way…i’ll stick with my rod and reel and fish the easy way.

@Tracka350 These rigs are usually set for around 20 minutes, and because they are on a running trace system the fish can still swim freely and are very much alive when they reach shore.

nice video, how far out do you have to let the line out at least?

I love this method of fishing. You can catch alot of big fish w/o wasting much time and efforts. This is great for land based fishermen to make a little buck to sell to the locals. As far as raping the sea comment whoever posted it, I’d say lets rape it. Why not ? its there, wide opened. Go tell that to your mama you damn boy who never grew up. The ocean covers 2/3 of Earth, of all the oil spilled from the Gulf drill in the US didn’t even pollute a fraction of it. Big freaking deal.

HI Paul,
Great video, I’ve been a surf caster for a few years but have never checked out kit fishing. I know you guys have the link there, but could you also recommend any good books to get started?
Best,
