Answer by watash legend
I live in upstate New York depends on what you are fishing for really I would say late spring through the summer. Well if you are going to throw em back no matter how big then anytime is really a good time to fish lake delta and Oneida lake have a good mixture of everything so those would be the top spots to fish without a preference

define “best”
do you want accuracy?
reliability?
simplicity?
widest range of ammunition?

the “best” bolt action rifle in my option would be either the m1903 Springfield in .30-06 or the Mosin Nagant M1891 in 7.62x54mmR.

both are world war military surplus bolt action rifles, both are reliable, accurate, but there are some differences. the m1903 costs a bit more ($ 350ish) and the action is a good deal more smooth. ammo is pricey.
The Mosin Nagant is a cheap Russian military surplus shooter, extremely rugged, reliable, simple rifle. like everything made by communists ammo is inexpensive and plentiful. Rifles are inexpensive ($ 50-$ 150) and plentiful too. downsides are that the rifle sights while simple and easy to use, are not as accurate as the m1903′s also, sometimes the action jams and its not smooth at all. Lower price, some things don’t work as well. but its very rugged and most can take extreme abuse (such as shooting 8mm Mauser bullets in a 7,62 bore)

I own a mosin nagant m91/30, very similar to the m1891, but made by the commies instead of imperial Russia, french, or some other country. the 91/30 is a lot cheaper in price, its that much cheaper in quality too. bolt is occasionally so sticky that I may use a rubber mallet to bang it open. counter bored models (like mine) are super rugged. the crown is recessed so its not possible to damage the rifling or the crown easily. its a bit less accurate than the m1891, and the craftsmanship overall is a bit less. but its still a great rifles in in my opinion, the best rifle. unlike other guns, if it breaks, just buy a new one.

On May 16, 2006 Robert Fromme was fishing with Frank Campbell of Niagara Region Fishing Charters. They were fishing on Lake Erie out of Buffalo, NY. Robert was fishing with a smoke colored tube lure in 28 feet of water and was using 6 pound Seaguar Fluorocarbon line. The fish put up an exciting tug of war, and he had a hard time trying to keep him away from the rocks that were covered with zebra mussels. This was Roberts fifth consecutive year that he has fished Lake Erie using Frank’s Guide Service.

Lake Erie Smallmouth Bass Fishing
Lake Erie is 241 miles long and 57 miles wide. It has an average depth of 62 feet and a maximum depth of 210 feet. Lake Erie has borders with four states NY, PA, OH, MI and our neighbor to the north Canada.

The species of fish found in Lake Erie’s waters include walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white bass, yellow perch, northern pike, chain pickerel, muskellunge, tiger muskellunge, lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, coho salmon, king salmon, pink salmon, rock bass, crappie, sunfish, bullheads, bowfin, white suckers, channel catfish, lake sturgeon, carp, alewives and smelt.

A well kept secret about Lake Erie may be that the best smallmouth bass fishing in the Northeastern United States can be found here. The last five NY state record smallmouths have come from Lake Erie, with the current record standing at 8 pounds 4 ounces. Anglers can also enjoy an early bass season on Lake Erie, which runs from the 1st Saturday in May until the 3rd Saturday in June. During this early season, there is a one fish limit and 15 inch minimum size requirement.

The two primary species of bass inhabiting N.Y. State waters are smallmouth and largemouth bass. Both species may be found in most all of the states lakes and rivers. The average bass caught is between 1 and 5 pounds, but there are many fish taken every year over 5 pounds. Bass fisherman by majority are a catch and release group so that affords this species a bit more protection than they would other wise receive.

Question by srizo: Best Smallmouth/largmouth bass bait when fishing from docks or onshore?
In about 5-10 feet deep of water? This is freshwater! There are weeds and this is in New york on oneida lake.

Best answer:

Answer by Backwater Charlie
6″ plastic worm, Texas rigged with a 1/8 OZ bullet weight. It is weed-less so it doesn’t get caught up on weeds very often. Plus it is the single-handed best lure ever put on the face of the earth. EVER. Just bounce it along the bottom and a good sized largemouth will pick it up. Use 4″ worms for smallmouth. They like smaller baits.
