I am currently 15 years old and plan to hunt deer for the first time this fall with my father. If I can use it I will ask a family friend if I can borrow his M1 Garand for hunting. I believe there is a limit of 6 rounds per cartridge so where can I obtain a six-round cartridge and if I can find one can I legally hunt with it?
I have already asked him and he is more than willing to allow me to borrow it. I am very familiar with firearms particularly the M1 garand and have used many different weapons in the past few years. I’m not some idiotic child that will roll around in mud with it and blow my head off. Really not sure how those type of replies answer my question but i’ll pick a best answer tomorrow.

Better wait until you’re a bit more familiar with firearms… and nobody in their right mind is going to lend you his Garand.

Okay, so I know where the deer are. There is an uncut cornfield where the stalks are still about 7 feet tall. I am in up state New York and it is snowing. I know they are in there, i have tracked them here. Now, this cornfield is big. About 30 acres or so. What is a good way to lure them out besides a drive and calls? I have been sitting out there from sunrise to sunset waiting for them, but they will not come out until after dark. Any ideas?

i live in New York and i heard that Canada has whitetail deer that are much larger than the ones here in the US. i just turned 14 and want to get my license this year to go hunting. i want to know this so i know where to hunt for larger deer in the future.

also i heard the deer down south have more points but arent as big as the ones farther up north. how much did the deer weigh if u can remember?

Canada has larger deer than the US on average. It’s just a matter of survival. To handle the cold temperatures and snow the deer needs to have a bigger body to make it through long winters. Take a trip to Texas and you’ll see smaller deer. The smaller bodies help them dissipate heat better. Deer size vary from state to state with the mid-west having some large deer. Deer that live near farms will also be bigger than mountain deer that have to survive on mast crops such as acorns. Age is also a factor in size. You’ll see big and small deer anywhere you go but on average Canada has the big ones.

Hello. I’m getting my hunting license soon and I was wondering if hunting deer with a .223 rifle is legal in New York. I’ve heard different answers, yes and no by multiple people. I checked the deer hunting regulations for NY and I did not find any specific size restriction, I only found something that said it is unlawful to hunt with any rimfire cartridge and since a .223 cartridge is centerfire I’m thinking it’s legal. So I guess another question would be what is the size minimum? Thank you.

.223 rifles were federally banned years ago. Don’t let a law enforcement official see you with it.

What is the smallest caliber? .22-250, or .243?
I have just undergone major surgery on my chest. When I get better, I am going to spent some money on myself, and go hunting on a Texas Game park. But right now, any recoil just kills me. I am read something to the effect that a lot of deer near the Texas Mexican Border is actually quite small, and they use the .22-250. In fact, I have heard the only reason Browning chambers their lever action rifle in .22-250 is Texas sales. I have also heard that since Texas has a much larger section of the population hunt than say, California or New York, that their hunting population includes a lot of people who don’t necessarily enjoy recoil all that much. Finally, I have heard that the Winchester 92 was extremely popular in Texas, and that Texans got used to using low recoil rifles for deer.
Is any of this true?

For maximum energy and minimum recoil, go with the 7mm-08. It has a recoil much akin to the .223 but ballistics of a .270 and quite capable of taking any of these animals. I got one last year and it’s flatter shooting and less recoil than my .22-250 and dropped a nice whitetail doe from 50 yards out and she jumped twice and was done. Another option is the 6.5×55, very similar ballistics.
Oh, and both are capable of up to 500 yard shots.
