The Hudson River South of Troy is popular when the stripers are running in May and no license is required there. Lake Erie and Lake Champlain are supposed to be good for smallmouth. Bass season opens the third Saturday in June. You will need a license in most places if you are over age 16. You can get one at just about any K-Mart or Dick’s Sporting Goods stores. It only takes a few minutes to get one. Last time I got one is was $ 19 for state residents. Not sure of the price for out-of staters, though. If you go to Champlian, be careful of where you are on the lake. Since it borders Vermont, part of the Lake is in Vermont and you would need a Vermont license to fish that part of it.
There are also hundreds of small lakes in the Adirondacks.

the license is $ 19, i know you can get a 1 day license but it would be just as smart to buy a annual license and go fishing when ever ya all want. the process takes less than 20 minutes if they are new maybe longer. you can get them right at walmart, kmart and much more. now for places to fish, thats a hard one to tell. you can go to the nysdec web site http://www.dec.state.ny.us . there are so many places in ny to fish at. my best advice is to check with local rod and gun clubs, or anyone who knows the area. i go to local lakes, if someone has a stocked pond i ask the owner if i can fish there (some time yes, sometimes no). and if all else fails go to http://www.ask.com look up the area your in and get a aerial view. well good luck and have fun… if you need more help just email me!!!
